The museum piece that lives outdoors
There's a contradiction that separates interesting furniture from important furniture. The tension between something you'd put behind glass in a museum and something you'd leave out in a tropical rainstorm.
Heller lives in that contradiction. Since 1971, the New York–based company has partnered with Frank Gehry, Mario Bellini, Massimo Vignelli, and JUMBO Studio to create furniture that belongs in MoMA's permanent collection. Which is where several pieces actually are. But these same pieces are engineered to sit on a Singapore rooftop bar, by a Sentosa pool, exposed to UV, tropical downpours, and 90% humidity. For years without fading, cracking, or degrading.
That's not marketing. It's material science.
Frank Gehry: architecture you sit in
The Pritzker Prize–winning architect behind the Guggenheim Bilbao needs no introduction. What's less known is his parallel career in furniture design. We how his Heller collaboration produced some of the most distinctive outdoor furniture ever made.
Where most furniture designers start with function and add form, Gehry starts with sculpture and engineers it to be functional. His Heller collection, launched in 2004, applies this philosophy to outdoor furniture using proprietary resin technology.
The collection:
- Gehry Color Chair. A twisting, organic form that looks caught mid-movement. Bold primary colours. Stacks for hospitality. Made from a single continuous form. No joints to fail.
- Gehry Left Twist Cube. A side table or stool based on architectural torque. Looks different from every angle while providing a stable, flat surface.
- Gehry Right Twist Cube. The mirror counterpart. Together, they create a visual dialogue that works beautifully in pairs or groups, a technique designers use effectively in hotel lobbies and outdoor lounges.
No cushions to mildew. No metal to corrode. No wood to warp. Just colour, form, and engineering.

The Gehry Collection entered MoMA's permanent collection. The Vitra Design Museum holds pieces too. MoMA doesn't collect furniture casually. This is a genuine indicator of design significance. The same chair in their gallery can be specified for a Singapore rooftop bar and will outlast everything else up there.
Mario Bellini: eight Compasso d'Oro awards in a stackable chair
If Gehry is the dramatic side of Heller's portfolio, Bellini is the refined counterpart. Eight Compasso d'Oro awards, 25 pieces in MoMA's permanent collection, two decades as editor of *Domus*. One of Italy's most decorated designers.
The Bellini Chair is a masterclass in restraint. A stackable chair in a single material. Heller's modified polypropylene. That manages to feel elegant and substantial without the visual heaviness of typical polypropylene furniture. A subtle waist at the backrest gives it an almost human profile. Legs taper gently. The seat has a slight concavity for comfort. Nothing is superfluous.
For Singapore projects:
- Stacks up to 4 high. Essential for events and flexible F&B
- UV-stabilised polypropylene that won't fade or go brittle
- Light enough for staff to move, heavy enough to resist wind
- Multiple colours from neutral to statement

It's one of those rare pieces where design quality is immediately apparent, even to guests who've never heard of Mario Bellini.
Massimo Vignelli: the system thinker
Vignelli (1931–2014) believed good design was a civic responsibility. Best known for the New York subway map and the American Airlines identity, he brought the same systematic thinking to everything.
His Heller dinnerware. Plates, bowls, mugs. Stacks with precise tolerances, creating colour-coded towers in bright primaries. The collection has been in continuous production since 1971. Over 50 years, essentially unchanged.
For Singapore F&B, it's tableware with genuine design history at a commercial price point. Dishwasher-safe, virtually unbreakable, melamine construction suited to poolside dining, rooftop bars, and outdoor events where porcelain would be a liability.

JUMBO studio: contemporary energy
Heller's collaboration with JUMBO Studio brings fresh perspective to the portfolio.
The MT Rocker reimagines the rocking chair for outdoor hospitality. Dynamic, contemporary, generous proportions. Available in Heller's signature bold colours for hotel terraces, poolside lounges, and resort common areas. The rocking motion adds an experiential dimension that static seating can't match. Guests photograph these.

Their vase collection extends the Heller aesthetic to decorative objects. Same weatherproof resin, same vivid colours, indoor or outdoor.

Worry free plastics: the end-of-life problem, solved
The biggest legitimate criticism of polypropylene furniture is environmental impact. Heller's Worry Free Plastics addresses it directly.
An organic additive triggers biodegradation in landfill conditions. Unlike standard polypropylene (persists for centuries), Heller's material breaks down into nutrient-rich biomass and biogas within ~5 years. During normal use, nothing changes. No degradation, no colour fade, no structural weakening. Products are designed for 10+ years of outdoor commercial use.
It's a more honest approach than brands using natural materials with shorter lifespans and higher replacement cycles. A Heller chair lasting 10 years outdoors and biodegrading at end of life has a better lifecycle impact than a wooden chair needing refinishing every 2 years and replacing every 5.
